Retreading part-worn tyres
Retreading a tyre involves providing it with a new tread when the previous one has reached its wear limit while the casing has maintained its full potential. The tread of a tyre must guarantee optimal performances on a varied range of surfaces, in different seasons and under different conditions of use.
All tyres for retreading are strictly examined visually, by touch and by means of non destructive controls. Using specific specialised machines, the worn tread is removed by grinding. The first operation, brushing, consists in removing with an appropriate tool any damaged parts from the tyre by means of skiving and cleaning. The second operation, building, consists in replacing the parts removed during brushing with new materials (appropriate rubber, reinforcing material, plies).
The retreading itself consists in placing a new rubber blank in accordance with a computerised plan. The rubber is worked mechanically beforehand so as to attain the desired level of homogeneity and temperature.
Once the rubber has been applied to the circumference of the casing, the tyre is introduced into a mould. The combination of heat and pressure will cure the rubber (vulcanisation), create the design of the tread pattern and ensure that the tread is securely attached to the casing. This manufacturing process is identical to that of new tyres. It has a lower cost for the user and offers the possibility of processing most heavyweight vehicle tyres.
